Political Issues
Immigration
Here again Peter speaks with understanding and boldness
"We are a nation of immigrants, we are a melting pot of various nations\ cultures. This is America 's greatest assets. Diversity is a source of strength not a source of strife The first thing we must do is to strengthen our borders on all sides and that includes both Canada and Mexico . While we may be concerned about illegal immigrants crossing the border for economic reasons from Mexico, the U.S. border with Canda is less secured and porous. Here are a few key points to keep in mind that I believe would establish common ground among Americans regardless of our political party or where we stand on this thorny issue".
All of us, especially candidates running for office, need to be responsible in our conduct and temper our words when speaking about this issue. In a nutshell, politicians on both sides should stop demagoguing the issue and using this difficult task to appeal to the morbid base instincts of people who tend to practice extreme politics. Instead we should view the debate on how best to gain control of our borders and bring about orderly immigration as a national challenge that we can easily overcome when we work together as Americans rather than a platform to score political points and further divide our country.
Track all the illegal immigrants that have committed crimes in America or against Americans, such as shooting a police officer, rape, robbery, and any other criminal act and apprehend them, jail them and later deport them. This will be the best use of our resources and it will send a powerful signal to the drug cartels south of our border that Americans are determined to halt the flagrant abuse of our borders.
Complete the high technology fence along the Mexico U.S. border and fully fund the training and hiring of additional U.S patrol agents especially to the southern states of our country that share a common border with Mexico
Tell the truth, no matter how painful it may be to the American people on what we can and cannot do given the current situation. The truth sets people free.
Increase economic assistance, with direct injection of U.S. dollars to the most impoverished areas of Mexico ; in a nut shell we need a comprehensive approach to the immigration challenges we face today. Fund vital projects critical to everyday living directly to the Mexicans to set an example for the Mexican Government on how best to addresss this problem.
Most republicans view former President Ronald Reagan as a great President. Yet, the same republicans who are against the so called Amnesty for undocumented workers forget that one of Reagan's great achievements while in office, was the sweeping Amnesty bill he passed in 1986 that gave thousands, probably millions of illegal aliens a path-way to citizenship. The real reason Reagan passed this bill was because majority of his key supporters who were farmers in the rich agriculture state of California needed his help in halting the harassment of their undocumented workers by the then INS-(Immigration and Naturalization Services.)
It is no secret that none of the presidential candidates, especially the republicans are willing to make a commitment to drive out all the illegal immigrants out of our country. Why is this the case? All the republicans vying for political office today together with the democrats understand the enormity of such an undertaking.
