The Environment

We need to be good stewards of the environment. We are already witnessing the consequences of not dealing swiftly with the global challenges to our environment. From Brazil to Asia and many parts of Africa we see large scale deforestation and subsequent emissions of hydrocarbons. Many tropical forest are vanishing due to logging and wide spread burning in order to meet the increasing demand for timber from the industrialized world. Cash strapped developing nations are to eager to agree to terms with multinational companies in which environmental sustainability is the last thing on their agenda. Until recently, leadership at the White House to say the least, was not forthcoming. As long as we live on this planet earth, we must all come to the understanding that none of us can be separated from this problem. The quality of life for the future generation would be directly tied to how you and I protect and sustain our environment today.

So what do we do?

Where there is a problem there is always a solution. Albert Einstein once said “that in the midst of every difficulty lies an opportunity”

Peter believes that individual responsibility is key when it comes to the environment. Peter believes that all of us can contribute meaningfully to creating a clean environment. Peter insists that we need to speak out with passion on matters pertaining to sustainability and preservation. “Our actions on this matter will determine how our leaders will respond, what becomes a major issue in our hearts will eventually be reflected by our leaders through legislation to protect and sustain our environment” says Peter.

Set a realistic time frame to reduce hydrocarbons and other global warming gases which in turn will reduce pollution to our lakes and rivers.

We need to reduce waste in every manufacturing process we are part of. In summary, turn the waste into a usable by-product of industrial production. We must reuse and recycle in a greater capacity. Avoid complacency by constantly looking for new ways to curb waste

Congress can demonstrate seriousness of purpose by transferring the tax incentives and the tax subsidies from the oil industry to a whole new generation of green industries: BEGIN A GREEN REVOLUTION; build and ignite a burning desire to GO GREEN!

Peter will support an increase in the budget allocated for cleanup of super fund sites through out the country. Economic disadvantaged areas of our country tend to be most affected by super fund sites. The health and wellbeing of families in these areas is at stake. All government departments and other functionalities must set an example by using more efficient vehicles, expanding their existing recycling programs and reducing waste. A wasteful government is evident not just in the way it spends the people's money but also in the way it functions.

Pass a stronger bill than the bipartisan energy bill President Bush recently signed that promotes fuel efficiency (ethanol, hydrogen cell, biomass...) Provide tax Incentives to taxpayers that will spur them into purchasing or leasing fuel efficient cars. Utilize co-generation to reduce pollution from coal fired plants and find a permanent sight for nuclear waste. Before we start building new nuclear reactors Peter believes we must first deal with the (NIMBY) situation: Not in my backyard ! for the storage of nuclear waste.
